Low literacy levels in Uganda are hampering the progress of government programs, as a large portion of the population finds it difficult to understand and benefit from these initiatives. Despite an increase from 56.1% in 1991 to 80.6% in 2022, the literacy rate in Uganda remains relatively low. This has significant implications for development, as it hinders effective communication and participation in various government programs.
The government has recognized the importance of addressing this issue and has partnered with organizations to implement adult education programs aimed at improving literacy levels. These programs provide essential skills to adults who missed out on formal education, enabling them to participate more fully in society and contribute to the country’s development.
However, more needs to be done to reach those living in remote areas and marginalized communities, where literacy rates are often lower than the national average. It is crucial to ensure that everyone has equal access to education and the opportunity to improve their lives.
