12th December 2022, JIRO Home learning Centre, Koboko District, Northern Uganda.
Young learners collectively enjoying playtime under close guidance from parent educators. These learners come from homesteads near the learning centre. Rhymes and songs used by the educators encourage early child development and are sang in the native language. Learning is free but Parents contribute through collecting funds that help to acquire basic needs like food for their children.
All this is under LABE (Literacy and Adult Basic Education) an innovation that seeks to provide basic education and literacy practices to marginalised communities in Uganda.
The innovation focuses on helping communities to understand the integration of basic education especially for children and women in these communities through an informal education setting.
Educators in these centres are trained parents and teenage facilitators and learning happens under tree shades and structures communally built by the parents of the children. The learning centres each have self-crafted playgrounds and learning spaces.

Suzana Orecie, 70, is the oldest member of the adult literacy class at Ambeko Primary School, Arua District, Uganda. She dropped out of primary school after second grade because her family didn’t have money for school fees. Many years later she joined LABE (Literacy and Adult Basic Education) sponsored adult literacy program. Says Suzana: I am here because education has no limits.
M.A., 16, a 6th-grade student, looks at the primary school in northern Uganda she is now attending. School had been an elusive goal for M.A. due to family pressures, early marriage, and abuse.
